En el año 2008, las importaciones de los Emiratos Árabes
Unidos crecieron un 45% en comparación con el año
2007, según informa un reporte emitido por el Ministerio
de Economía de ese país, el cual señala que
el notable crecimiento se debió al aumento en la demanda
interna del país impulsada por el boom de los negocios
e inversiones y los altos precios del petróleo.
En concreto las importaciones emiratíes sumaron Dh 565 billones.
China e India surgieron como los principales proveedores,
justificando en su conjunto el 22% de las importaciones emiratíes.
Otros proveedores relevantes fueron Estados Unidos, Japón,
Alemania, Reino Unido y Turquía.
Chile se posicionó como el proveedor Nº 69, con operaciones
por Dh 274.497.530 y una cuota de mercado del 0,05% del total importado
por los EAU.

En cuanto al ranking de los productos importados podemos ver en
el cuadro inferior, que el oro lidera las compras internacionales
de los emiratís con Dh 48.615 millones, los vehículos
ocupan el segundo lugar con Dh 40.519 millones.

Emiratos Árabes y la OMC
El 10 de abril de 1996 los EAU pasaron a ser miembros fundadores
de la OMC; habían sido parte contratante del GATT
desde el 8 de marzo de 1994
Acuerdos económicas regionales
y bilaterales
Los Emiratos Árabes Unidos forman parte del Concejo
de Cooperación del Golfo (GCC por sus siglas en inglés),
junto a Bahréin, Arabia Saudita, Omán, Qatar y
Kuwait). Los objetivos del GCC son crear un mercado común
y una unión aduanera, implementado de manera conjunto
medidas en las áreas de la economía, turismo,
comercio, aduanas, legislación y administración.
En cuanto a sus relaciones comerciales con el resto del mundo,
se puede decir que los países miembros del GCC buscan
activamente estrechar sus vínculos de comercio tanto
a nivel individual como de grupo.
A nivel grupal registran la firma de acuerdos de libre comercio
con Jordania, el EFTA y Singapur, actualmente se encuentran
en negociaciones con la Unión Europea, Japón,
Estados Unidos, India, Turquía, China y MERCOSUR, entre
otros.
